Driving the news: Dealership buy/sell activity remains robust in 2024, even as profits cool from their pandemic highs. In Q2, 84 dealerships changed hands—a slower pace than Q1 but still a sign of strong interest in acquisitions.

2. New and used car prices decline in Aug. but buyers are still hesitant

Car prices are down, and inventory levels are rising, but affordability issues continue to hold back demand in both the new and used vehicle markets.
By the numbers: According to Cars Commerce’s August report, new car prices have dropped 2.5% year-over-year, with supply up 40.2% compared to 2023.
Meanwhile, used car prices fell 4.9% annually, though inventory has remained mostly flat.
Despite these trends, consumer demand is down, with new car interest falling 6.6% and used car interest dropping 3.4%.
