GM expands EV charging network with Tesla Supercharger adapter

General Motors’ EV owners can now tap into Tesla’s vast Supercharger network – but it'll cost them.

Driving the news: GM has increased the accessibility of public chargers for GM EV drivers, with the addition of over 17,800 Tesla Superchargers to its EV charging network.

  • Future GM models will come equipped with Tesla’s charging port.

  • GM had initially planned to finish the software update by early spring 2024, but production bottlenecks at Tesla delayed the process.

How it works: To use the Tesla Superchargers, GM EV drivers will need to purchase a GM-approved North American Charging Standard (NACS) DC adapter through the brand’s official mobile app.

  • The GM apps can also be used to locate Tesla Superchargers, check the status of the stations, initiate a charge, and pay for a charging session.

Why it matters: The lack of reliable charging stations has been a major hurdle for potential EV buyers, and Tesla's Supercharger network is considered one of, if not the best, in the world. GM's move addresses customer concerns and offers more charging convenience, aiming to make EV ownership more accessible.

What they’re saying: "Enabling access to even more publicly available fast chargers represents yet another way GM is focused on further improving the customer experience and making the transition to electric more seamless," said Wade Sheffer, vice president of GM Energy.

Between the lines: GM is charging customers a cool $225 USD for adapters, unlike Ford and Rivian, which briefly offered them for free. The company is also sourcing adapters from multiple suppliers, including Tesla and other manufacturers like Lectron and Qmerit, to prevent complete reliance on Tesla.

Bottom line: While GM has lagged behind in developing its own charging infrastructure, this move offers immediate value to its EV owners by addressing a critical pain point: convenient, fast charging. As GM pushes for broader EV adoption, integrating with Tesla’s network could significantly boost customer confidence and drive sales.
