Stellantis is recalling nearly one million vehicles worldwide over a radio software issue that could disrupt the rear-view camera, as concerns around vehicle software issues continue to grow across the industry.
The details: The recall covers a range of 2026 and 2027 model-year vehicles, including 848,000 in the U.S. and roughly 107,000 in Canada, Mexico, and other markets, according to Reuters.
Six of the impacted models are Jeep vehicles, including the Cherokee, Compass, Gladiator, Grand Cherokee, Grand Wagoneer and Wrangler.
Other recalled vehicles include the Chrysler Pacifica, Pacifica Plug-in Hybrid and Voyager, as well as the Ram 1500, 2500 and ProMaster.
Stellantis said it has received no reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue but is advising drivers to use their rear-view and side mirrors when reversing.
The fix consists of an over-the-air radio software update that owners will be prompted to install through their vehicle's media screen once available.
Why it matters: The recall puts another large group of Stellantis customers in need of a safety-related software fix, making clear communication from dealers particularly important even though the over-the-air update could reduce the need for customers to bring affected vehicles into service departments.

Between the lines: The Stellantis recall comes more than a decade after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration mandated in 2014 that all light-duty vehicles be equipped with rear-view cameras by 2018.
NHTSA found that backover crashes caused an average of 210 deaths and 15,000 injuries annually in the U.S.
Even more alarming, children aged 5 or younger accounted for 30% of deaths from those crashes, per Reuters.
Bottom line: Stellantis' latest recall highlights how software is becoming an increasingly important part of vehicle safety, perceived dependability, and recall management, requiring dealers to stay prepared to communicate fixes and support customers even as over-the-air updates change the traditional service-recall process.
