On April 16, Stellantis filed two separate recalls with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) covering a combined 9,294 vehicles tied to two separate issues.

Driving the news: The first recall (No. 26E021) covers 2,689 2.0L engines used in Jeep plug-in hybrid vehicles. A specific model year was not listed in the filing, but the NHTSA noted that affected engines were produced between June 1, 2023, and March 15, 2024.

  • Engines built outside that window are not included in the recall.

  • Per the filing, "sand from the casting process can contaminate internal engine components, leading to an engine failure, which can result in a vehicle fire or an unexpected and unrecoverable loss of propulsion."

  • It's worth noting that this is also an expansion of an earlier recall.

The filing says a subsequent fire in a vehicle that fell outside the original scope prompted further investigation and surfaced additional affected engines, but that no injuries or accidents have been reported as of March 13.

Also on April 16: A second recall (No. 26V244) was filed, covering 6,605 model-year 2026 Ram 2500 pickups built with a Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) that can develop an internal fault, disabling Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

  • Per the filing, the fault "may result in the loss of ESC functionality when intervention is expected and/or relied upon, which may cause a vehicle crash without prior warning."

  • The only signal owners might get beforehand is the ESC warning light coming on after the module resets.

Looking ahead: In the case of the Jeep models, dealers will inspect and replace affected engines as needed at no charge, with owner letters going out May 7. For the Ram issue, Stellantis will replace the SCCM with a new design at no charge, with dealer notifications going out April 23 and owner letters following May 7.
