Driving the news: On December 12, 2025, Ford $F ( ▼ 0.29% ) announced a recall of 272,645 vehicles from model years 2022-2026 after discovering that transmissions may not lock into Park, potentially causing vehicles to roll away.
The details: The recall covers model years 2022-2026 of the F-150 Lightning (104,113 units), 2024-2026 Mustang Mach-E (88,064 units), and 2025-2026 Maverick Hybrid (80,468 units).
The problem: A component inside the transmission can bind due to manufacturing variations, preventing Park from fully engaging.
When that happens, the Park indicator on the dash won't light up, and a wrench light and fault message will appear.
The electronic parking brake automatically applies when Park is selected, but if it has a fault or drivers turn it off manually, the vehicle could roll and increase crash risk.
Ford estimates only about 1% of affected vehicles have the defect.
Worth noting: Ford uncovered the issue in July 2025 during pre-delivery inspections. As of November 24, Ford had received 42 warranty claims related to the fault. No accidents or injuries have been reported.
The remedy: Ford will deploy an over-the-air software update that unbinds the component if the condition occurs. Owners can also take vehicles to dealers for the update at no charge. Dealer notifications go out January 26, 2026, and drivers can check VINs here.
