Volkswagen announced today (April 9) that it will stop assembling the ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant starting mid-month. CDG also obtained a memo sent directly to VW dealers that had bold language about the change.

"This re-prioritization of our production line-up has been influenced by shifts in EV demand and broader market conditions," the memo read. “As the EV market continues to evolve, local production resources are being realigned toward models with the greatest demand.”

That demand, at least for now, is the Atlas.

The details: According to both the release and the dealer memo, VW is pivoting Chattanooga's primary focus to the launch of the all-new, second-generation Atlas for model year 2027.

  • Production kicks off this summer, with dealership availability in the fall.

  • For context, the Atlas has ranked as VW's second-best-selling model in the U.S. for three straight years.

"This change supports the next generation of Atlas by creating additional capacity on the production line," the memo explained. Still, VW says dealers can expect current MY2026 ID.4 inventory to carry customer demand into 2027.

  • Oh, and hourly employees working in ID.4-specific roles now will be reassigned within the plant based on seniority, with an early retirement option available for eligible employees, according to VW.

Big picture: Despite this feeling like yet another “OEM backs off of their EV strategies” headline, VW seems to be pushing back on the characterization.

In their words: "We remain committed to our EV portfolio and are presently evaluating the introduction of other new electrified models," the dealer memo read.

The official release also confirmed that a future ID.4 is still planned for North America and that VW is exploring a new Chattanooga-built model for U.S. consumers, though both were left without timelines or details.
