Cars and trucks manufactured in European Union countries could soon be facing a new, increased tariff of 25%.
On his Truth Social site on Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump posted, “Next week I will be increasing Tariffs charged to the European Union for Cars and Trucks coming into the United States. The Tariff will be increased to 25%.”
What we know: Trump said the tariff increase was based “on the fact the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to trade deal.”
For context, the U.S. and EU had agreed to a 15% tariff last summer during meetings in Scotland.
The Trump post did not indicate how the tariff would be imposed. The U.S. Supreme Court in February overturned the Trump Administration’s ability to impose reciprocal tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Following the court decision, Trump signed an executive order to impose a 10% tariff on goods from all countries.
In his post Friday, Trump stated the tariffs would not be applied to vehicles manufactured at U.S. plants.
“Many automobile and truck plants are currently under construction, with over 100 billion dollars being invested, a RECORD in the History of Car and Truck Manufacturing. These Plants, staffed with American Workers, will be opening soon.”

“Trump’s plan to impose 25% tariffs on EU cars is unacceptable. EP is still honouring the Scotland deal, working to finalise legislation. While the EU delivers, the U.S. side keeps breaking its commitments,” Lange said.
