On March 31, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) logged a recall filed by Toyota covering 73,528 model-year 2023-2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles.
The issue: The vehicles' Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), which makes a sound to alert pedestrians of the car's presence, was calibrated for forward motion only.
That means, when reversing, the single front-mounted speaker produces a lower-than-intended sound level, potentially making it harder for pedestrians to detect the vehicle and increasing crash risk.
This also puts affected vehicles out of compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 141, which sets minimum sound requirements for hybrid and electric vehicles.
The fix: Dealers will update the relevant software at no charge, and there are no "do not drive" advisories in place.
Other than that, dealer notifications went out March 31. And owner notification letters are expected between May 16-30.
