On March 31, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) logged a recall filed by Toyota covering 73,528 model-year 2023-2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles.

The issue: The vehicles' Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), which makes a sound to alert pedestrians of the car's presence, was calibrated for forward motion only.

  • That means, when reversing, the single front-mounted speaker produces a lower-than-intended sound level, potentially making it harder for pedestrians to detect the vehicle and increasing crash risk.

  • This also puts affected vehicles out of compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 141, which sets minimum sound requirements for hybrid and electric vehicles.

The fix: Dealers will update the relevant software at no charge, and there are no "do not drive" advisories in place.

  • Other than that, dealer notifications went out March 31. And owner notification letters are expected between May 16-30.
