Driving the news: Toyota is recalling 55,405 hybrid Camry and Corolla vehicles from model years 2025-2026 that can lose power while driving, or potentially catch fire.

The details: The recall covers 2025-2026 Camry Hybrids (51,644 units) and 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrids (3,761 units) built between August and November 2025. Toyota estimates only about 1% actually have the defect.

  • The problem traces back to inverter assemblies supplied by Denso Manufacturing Tennessee. An improperly torqued bolt can lose contact and drop inside the inverter.

  • If the bolt loses contact, it can create an open circuit that triggers a warning lamp and may cause limp mode or complete loss of motive power.

  • If the bolt is loose and the ignition is on, it could also short circuit and generate enough heat to cause thermal damage to surrounding components (potentially leading to a fire).

Worth noting: Toyota discovered the issue in early November after a field report of a vehicle that wouldn't turn on. The dealer and supplier found a loose bolt lying on the circuit board. Denso reviewed production history and found machine settings had changed, leading to low torque on specific bolts.

The remedy: Dealers will repair affected vehicles at no charge once Toyota finalizes the fix. Owner notifications will go out by February 13, 2026 and drivers can check VINs here.
