Driving the news: Toyota is recalling 141,286 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles from model years 2023-2026 over rear doors that could unexpectedly pop open.
For context: The issue affects certain 2023–2026 Toyota Prius models, 2023–2024 Prius Prime vehicles and 2025–2026 Prius Plug-In Hybrid models with a specific electric rear door lock system made by supplier Tokai Rika.
If the switch seal degrades over time from heat cycling, water can get inside and short-circuit the switch, potentially causing the door to open if it's unlocked.
This is Toyota's second recall for unexpected door openings. The first (24V-274) was filed in April 2024.
The automaker estimates that only 1% of the recalled vehicles have the defect.
Worth noting: Toyota found the problem after getting a field report from Japan in February 2025 about a rear door opening to half-latch while driving.
Bottom line: Dealers will modify the rear door switch circuits to prevent activation at no charge to consumers. Owner notifications go out March 29, and drivers can check VINs here.
