Stellantis delays 1st all-electric model to focus on Ramcharger EREV
The Ram 1500 REV is now slated to arrive sometime in 2026. (3 min. read)
Stellantis is delaying the launch of its fully-electric Ram 1500 REV truck to 2026, shifting focus to the extended-range Ramcharger.
Driving the news: The move comes as Stellantis is facing slower-than-expected electric vehicle sales and stiff competition with automakers in China.
In a release, Ram said its decision to prioritize the Ramcharger over the 1500 was “driven by overwhelming consumer interest” for extended-range models as well as “maintaining a competitive advantage in the technology.”
It also blamed the delay on a slowdown in demand for “half-ton BEV pickups.”
Looking ahead: This marks the second delay in as many months for the 1500 REV.
Originally slated to launch this year, Ram pushed the date back to the first half of 2025 last month. Now, the vehicle is scheduled to arrive sometime in 2026.
Despite the delays, the model is still set to be the company’s first battery-only model.
Zooming in: As an extended-range vehicle, the Ramcharger combines a 92 kWh battery with a 3.6-liter V6 generator.
Used together, the truck can drive up to 690 miles without needing to charge. Since they lack the traditional motor of an ICE vehicle, extended-range cars are seen as offering a greener alternative to hybrids without the range anxiety of fully electric models.
Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis, who came back to Stellantis this month after retiring in May, referred to the pickup as the brand’s “Goldilocks truck,” offering a solid balance between power, range, and capability.
Thanks to the Ram 1500 REV delay, orders for the Ramcharger are due to open in early 2025.
Looking back: Kuniskis’ return and his decision to postpone deliveries of the Ram 1500 comes hot on the heels of former Stellantis chief Carlos Tavares’ unceremonious exit at the start of the month.
Since Tavares’ resignation, blamed on conflicts over strategy with the board, the company has sought to reshuffle its executive leadership and improve its sales approach.
Kuniskis replaces former Ram CEO Chris Feuell, who continues to lead Chrysler and recently took leadership over Alfa Romeo.
But the company faces a long road to recovery. Stellantis sales were down roughly 20% year-over-year in Q3, with revenues falling 27%.
