Rivian quietly launches pre-owned vehicle division

Rivian has followed through on rumored plans to introduce an online store where consumers can purchase previously owned Rivian vehicles. 

Details first: Rivian’s pre-owned vehicle sales division is currently only offered in California and Illinois. The pre-owned vehicles available through Rivian in each of the respective markets are highlighted on Rivian’s website in the R1 Shop tab and includes both the two-row R1T pickup and the three-row R1S model.

Pre-owned vehicles purchased through Rivian include:

• Carfax history report 

• Factory warranty

• 7-day or 500-mile return policy

The availability time for the vehicles is listed as one to four weeks for pickup.

Digging deeper: A search on Rivian’s websites for pre-owned vehicle inventory in the southern California area, more specifically the Metro Los Angeles area, listed five R1T pickups and four R1S vehicles available.

A quick, general assessment of the price difference between a new and pre-owned Rivian vehicle highlights the cost benefits for consumers who opt for the latter.      

• Listed costs for the pre-owned Rivian pickups currently available ranged from $62,370 for a 2023 RT1 Adventure with 16,581 miles up to $77,880 for a 2023 R1S Adventure with 992 miles.  

• The starting MSRP is $69,900 for a 2025 Rivian R1T Adventure and $75,900 for a 2025 R1S Adventure.

Look for Rivan to scale up its pre-owned vehicle offerings in other markets soon. 

Why it matters: Given the growing consumer interest in used EVs, Rivian’s pre-owned vehicle is a smart business move. Cars.com said used EV searches have increased by 45% on their site.

Bigger picture: Given the current volatility of the EV market and the relatively high cost of a new electric vehicle, expect more EV-based automakers to launch or expand their pre-owned vehicle offerings and accompanying services sooner than later.
