On March 31, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) logged a voluntary recall (No. 26V188) filed by Nissan covering 51 model-year 2026 LEAF vehicles over a potential battery defect.

The issue: A manufacturing defect may have damaged battery cell material, which could cause an internal short circuit and lead to a thermal event, including a fire.

  • Nissan has confirmed two related incidents, one in Japan and one in the U.S., with no reported injuries.

The fix: Nissan will inspect and replace affected battery modules at no charge. Until then, owners are advised not to charge their vehicles and to park outside and away from structures.

Per the NHTSA, dealer notifications went out March 27, and owner letters are expected April 17.
