Honda to build first Acura EV at retooled Ohio hub

Acura Performance EV Concept

Honda has no immediate plans to abandon its gas models, but the automaker is clearly aiming to transition to an all-EV line up.

The company recently announced a pivotal part of that shift: plans to build its new all-electric Acura at its EV Hub in Marysville, Ohio. The new Acura EV will be the brand’s first electric vehicle, with production set to begin in late 2025.

Key details:

  • The Acura EV will be based on the Acura Performance EV Concept, which debuted during the 2024 Monterey Car Week.

  • It will be the first vehicle built on the new Honda-developed EV platform.

  • In addition to EVs, Honda’s Hub will also manufacture gas and hybrid models.

Why it matters: The Ohio EV hub will play a pivotal role in how Honda approaches manufacturing in North America and globally. The retooled Marysville auto plant, which is about 27 miles northwest of Columbus, is part of a $700 million investment Honda has made in its production facilities in Ohio.

What’s next: Despite keeping gas and hybrid production in the mix, Honda’s long-term plan is to make battery-electric and fuel-cell electric vehicles 100% of its sales by 2040.

  • Honda’s strategy also includes a $3.5 billion investment commitment in a joint venture with LG Energy Solution to build a battery facility in Ohio — scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024.

Bottom line: While Honda may have arrived late to the EV party, Honda Prologue sales crossed 10,000 units so far this year as the electric SUV rolled out to the entire dealer network. In August, the Prologue was the top-selling EV. Time will tell if Honda can replicate similar success with its Acura nameplate.
