General Motors is retiring the gas-powered Chevy Blazer after 2025

While the company has walked back its all-in EV stance, it’s still pushing forward with electrification where it makes sense. (2 min. read)

GM reportedly is moving on from the gas-powered Chevy Blazer—now putting all its energy into the all-electric model of the SUV in the U.S.

The details: According to GM Authority, the ICE Blazer will be discontinued in North America after the 2025 model year— as the company zeroes in on the EV model, which is quickly shaping up to be a key component of Chevy’s product strategy and GM’s overall product portfolio strategy.

  • Troubled with a few hurdles early on, U.S. sales of the Blazer EV grew from 19 units in Q3 of 2023 to a total of 7,998 deliveries in Q3 of 2024, with another 1,596 units sold in Canada in Q3.

  • The Blazer EV and all-electric Equinox help catapult GM to a first-half EV sales record in 2024, with GM delivering 21,930 EVs in Q2 of 2024, an increase of 34% from Q1.

  • A new AWD variant of the Blazer EV—released late last year, with a starting price of $45,995—gives the automaker a much-needed, lower-priced trim model to appeal to a wider scope of price-conscious buyers.

Between the lines: The gas-powered Blazer is one of the latest ICE models to be discontinued by GM, as the company pushes forward with its electrification strategy to be a dominant player in the EV market in the U.S. and globally.

  • The current Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6—both powered by a 3.6-liter V6 engine—will be discontinued by GM at the end of 2025 as well.

  • The current ICE Blazer variant is assembled at GM’s Ramos Arizpe facility in Mexico, the only internal-combustion model built at the plant.

Bottom line: While the company has walked back its all-in EV stance, it’s still pushing forward with electrification where it makes sense. But the true test will be the Blazer EV’s ability to capture more market share in the segment with the lower-priced AWD model.
