Ford sees Oct. sales gains backed by trucks, but EVs drop
Ford sold a total of 172,756 vehicles last month, with gas-powered vehicles leading the way. (3 min. read)
Ford sales were up 15% year-over-year in Oct. due in large part to a surge in hybrid and truck sales.
The details: Ford sold a total of 172,756 vehicles last month, including both Ford and the automaker’s luxury brand, Lincoln, with gas-powered vehicles making up the bulk of the company’s sales.
ICE vehicles accounted for 86% of Ford’s sales last month, increasing 14%.
Hybrid sales increased 39% — and the automaker’s Lincoln brand saw a 36% surge.
Ford’s electric vehicle sales declined, dropping 8.3% from a year ago due to the sales slump of the F-150 Lighting, which fell nearly 50% in Oct. However, sales of Mustang Mach-E rose 21%.
Trucks: Ford truck sales overall increased by 29% in Q3, with several models posting notable increases.
Sales of Ford’s popular F-Series rose 26%, with F-150 sales up 23% and sales for the Super Duty rising 31%.
Deliveries for the F-150 hybrid, which accounts for 25% of F-150 sales increased 51% in October.
The Ranger sold more than 10 times the number sold a year ago and the Maverick posted a 14% increase, with its hybrid variant rising 47%.
SUVs: Ford SUV sales increased 2.3% in October, with the Ford Bronco leading the charge.
Bronco sales surged 105% last month, with sales for its Sport sibling increasing 13%.
Expedition deliveries climbed 12%; sales of the Explorer rose 3.1%; and sales for the Escape were up 1.7%.
Final Note: Ford’s October sales paint an interesting picture. Hybrids and trucks are taking off, but EVs? Not so much — especially with the F-150 Lightning struggling while the Mustang Mach-E finds its stride. With a projected $5 billion loss in its EV division this year, Ford seems to be rethinking its approach. Instead of going all-in on electric, they’re doubling down on hybrids — a move that might just play to their strengths and better match what buyers want right now.
