Driving the news: BMW is recalling 87,394 vehicles from model years 2021-2024 over faulty engine starters that could cause fires.
For context: The issue affects 10 BMW models (plus the Toyota Supra, which shares BMW's engine) equipped with starters made by supplier Valeo during a specific production period.
Due to unexpected wear on an internal component, the starter may not function properly.
In extreme cases, this could cause a fire when starting the engine or while it's running.
The automaker estimates that only 0.1% of the recalled vehicles have the defect.
Worth noting: BMW identified the issue after reviewing field incidents between October 2024 and March 2025 involving thermal damage to starters.
The remedy: Dealers will replace the engine starter at no charge. Owner notifications go out March 24, and drivers can check VINs here.
