BMW-powered flying car is heading for mass production

The vehicle/aircraft has 170 flight hours, more than 500 takeoffs and landings, and costs a cool $1 million. (3 min. read)

Flying cars are one step closer to becoming a reality for the masses—with the Klein Vision AirCar gearing up for launch.

The details: The Slovakia-based company recently unveiled its production prototype for what it touts as the first “mass-produced” flying car. Though the location for the debut, which was Beverly Hills, reaffirms that the winged ride is targeted at a highly select few buyers in the market for a different kind of ride.

  • The AirCar transforms from a car into an aircraft in less than two minutes and is powered by a BMW 280-horsepower engine that can reach speeds of 155 mph.

  • The AirCar’s test runs—which already hold a “Certificate of Airworthiness”—have included 170 flight hours and more than 500 takeoffs and landings.

The debut also honored the AirCar’s inventor and designer, Stefan Klein, with the “Special Recognition Award for Engineering Excellence,” with a guest list that included Hollywood A-listers John Travolta and Morgan Freeman. Organized by the Living Legends of Aviation, the recognition award celebrates groundbreaking achievements in personal air mobility.

What they’re saying: "Receiving this recognition from the Living Legends of Aviation is a tremendous honor and a humbling milestone. The AirCar fulfills a lifelong dream to bring the freedom of flight into the hands of everyday people,” said Klein.

Sounds farfetched? Well, for “everyday people,” it might be, given that the AirCar is expected to cost anywhere from $800,000 to $1M when it goes on sale in early 2026, reports The Next Web

  • Klein said he already has some pre-orders for the AirCar and sees opportunities in shared mobility services like Uber in the future.

  • The founders claim the company will commercially introduce the AirCar in Q1 2026, per The Robb Report.

  • The global air mobility market is projected to reach $162 billion by 2034 at a growth rate of over 50% CAGR, according to the company.

Between the lines: Despite the AirCar’s progress, don’t expect to see them on American roads (or in the skies) anytime soon.

  • For the U.S., the AirCar would require approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and additional certifications for road use, which have not been reported as completed.

  • Meanwhile, the AirCar received a Certificate of Airworthiness from the Slovak Transport Authority in January 2022, but that only enables potential mass production and commercialization in Europe.

  • On top of that, Klein Vision sold exclusive manufacturing and distribution rights for the AirCar technology to Hebei Jianxin Flying Car Technology Company in China.

Bottom line: The AirCar might be a technical marvel, but the road to mass-market availability is still winding. For now, it’s less of a revolution in transportation, and more a glimpse of what ultra-premium mobility could look like for the few who can afford it.
