Amazon officially starts selling new Hyundai vehicles online
“We’re partnering with dealers and brands to redesign car shopping — making it more transparent, convenient, and customer-friendly," said Fan Jin, global head of Amazon Autos. (2 min. read)
Amazon has launched its online car shopping platform with Hyundai – one of many moves the ecommerce giant is making to become a bigger player in the automotive business.
First things first: Amazon Autos – introduced at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show – now enables vehicle shoppers in 48 cities to browse, order, finance and schedule the pickup online.
Consumers can browse and search for available vehicles at their local dealer by make, model, trim, color, and features.
Car shoppers get an instant valuation and trade in their existing vehicle toward the price of the new vehicle.
Buyers can see transparent, upfront pricing for the vehicle – and secure financing or pay in full.
Amazon Autos also aims to streamline the checkout process for a new vehicle – much like it does for the countless other products sold on the site. In addition, car buyers can schedule their new vehicle pickup from their local participating dealer directly from Amazon.
Digging deeper: Car sales are not the only aspect of the automotive business that Amazon has been focusing on in recent years. The e-commerce and tech giant has been busy building other B2B and B2C business offerings in the auto sector.
Amid widespread declines in third-party online auto parts sales, Amazon’s market share in the sector has been growing, up to 12.1% in Q4 of 2023 compared to 11.1% the year prior.
Since launching in 2006, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has become a go-to cloud provider for several automotive companies, spanning software-defined vehicles to digital consumer engagement tools. Hyundai’s partnership with Amazon includes AWS being the automaker’s preferred cloud provider.
There are speculations that Amazon’s long-term plans for the robotaxi startup Zoox – which the company purchased in 2020 – could be used as an autonomous transportation service offered to Amazon Prime members.
Weighing it all: The depth of Amazon’s plans in automotive is still unknown, which is to be expected from any company intent on disrupting the space. But one thing is certain: if the Amazon Autos partnership with Hyundai proves successful (for both consumers and dealers), look for the e-commerce giant to quickly expand the offering to more auto brands, while it aims to disrupt other areas of the business.
