VW, Nissan, Volvo, and Ram hit by major backup camera recalls
CDG News Alert (1 min. read)

2025 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
Driving the news: Volkswagen, Nissan, Volvo and Ram are recalling a combined 900,000 vehicles for rearview camera malfunctions that could increase crash risk when backing up.
VW is pulling 171,380 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport SUVs from 2024-25 for distorted camera images.
Meanwhile, Nissan is recalling nearly 80,000 2025 Frontiers and Kicks for blank displays when shifting into reverse.
And Ram is recalling over 235,000 ProMaster vans (2022-25) over a software error in the security gateway module that may cause the rearview camera image not to display.
Volvo is recalling 413,000 vehicles across nearly its entire lineup in the U.S. due to a rearview camera image that does not display.
Why it matters: These recalls highlight ongoing struggles with backup camera technology that's been federally mandated since 2018. Electrical systems and back over prevention tech were already among the top recall categories in Q1 2025, suggesting the industry is still working out bugs in what should be mature technology.
What we're watching: The pattern of software-related camera failures across multiple brands raises questions about quality control in backup systems. Ford separately recalled over 1 million vehicles for similar camera issues, showing this isn't isolated to just two manufacturers but appears to be an industry-wide challenge.
