Volvo is launching longer-range versions of its hybrid XC60 and XC90 models as more consumers gravitate toward the electrified vehicles.

The details: The new Volvo variants are part of a broader product shift in the European and American markets, reported Reuters.

  • The electric range of the new hybrid XC60 and XC90 is more than two and a half times that of the existing variants, thanks to a larger-capacity battery and a more powerful electric motor, Volvo Cars said.

  • The new hybrid XC60 has an electric range of up to 200 kilometers (124 miles) per charge, while the new hybrid XC90 offers up to 160 kilometers (99 miles).

What they’re saying: "These long-range hybrids are a key part of Volvo Cars' bridge to a fully electric future," Volvo said in a statement, per Reuters.

Why it matters: The longer-range XC60 and XC90 hybrids could give Volvo dealers more compelling options for customers interested in electric driving without making the full transition to an EV, potentially broadening the appeal of two key models.

Between the lines: Plans to launch the new hybrid variants come amid significant challenges for Volvo in the U.S. market, particularly among its dealer body.

  • First-quarter U.S. sales were down 32% compared with the same period last year, and despite gaining some momentum in Q2, total sales were still down 12% through the first half of 2026, according to AutoBlog.

  • The National Automobile Dealers Association’s 2026 Winter Dealer Attitude Survey ranked Volvo 24th out of 32 brands, underscoring some of the frustration dealers have with the brand.

What they’re saying: “We’re not happy with where we’re performing as a brand,” said Scott Doering, who’s responsible for the automaker’s U.S. dealer network, per AutoBlog. “We need to be better at getting a pulse of the issues that are in the dealer network, and that survey specifically is a fantastic mechanism to get a temperature of the network.”

Bottom line: Volvo is betting that longer-range hybrids can strengthen its product lineup and help bridge the gap to electrification amid U.S. market headwinds, while providing dealers with additional opportunities to capture electrification demand as the brand works to rebuild sales momentum and improve its relationship with retailers.
