Uber $UBER ( ▲ 0.35% ) is revving up to deploy one of the “world’s largest networks of autonomous vehicles” through a new partnership with Nvidia $NVDA ( ▲ 2.99% )—with Stellantis $STLA ( ▼ 0.88% ) providing the first fleet of vehicles for the venture.

The details: The collaboration, announced Tuesday, is aimed at accelerating the next generation of robotaxi and autonomous delivery fleets using Nvidia’s advanced AI architecture.

  • The vehicles will be co-developed with Nvidia and other Uber partners.

  • They will leverage Nvidia’s latest Drive AGX Hyperion autonomous vehicle platform and the company’s DriveOS operating system.

  • The vehicles will also feature Nvidia’s full-stack Drive AV software, purpose-built for Level 4 autonomy.

What they’re saying: “NVIDIA is the backbone of the AI era, and is now fully harnessing that innovation to unleash L4 autonomy at enormous scale, while making it easier for NVIDIA-empowered AVs to be deployed on Uber,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, per a press release. “Autonomous mobility will transform our cities for the better, and we’re thrilled to partner with NVIDIA to help make that vision a reality.”

Why it matters: The partnership represents a major leap toward large-scale commercialization of autonomous vehicles—combining Uber’s global mobility network with Nvidia’s powerful AI and computing platforms. If successful, it could redefine urban transportation, speeding the shift toward autonomous mobility at scale.

Between the lines: Stellantis, which will provide at least 5,000 Nvidia-Drive-powered Level 4 vehicles to Uber, gains a unique foothold in the evolving autonomous mobility ecosystem by building on some of the company’s existing innovations.

  • The collaboration expands Stellantis’ efforts to advance global Level 4 (driverless) autonomous mobility solutions.

  • It unites the automaker’s engineering, AI computing, and ride-hailing expertise into a scalable platform.

  • The deal also builds on Stellantis’ AV-Ready Platforms, aimed at delivering safer, more efficient, and cost-effective robotaxi services.

“Autonomous mobility opens the door to new, more affordable transportation choices for customers,” said Antonio Filosa, CEO of Stellantis. “We have built AV-Ready Platforms to meet growing demand, and by partnering with leaders in AI, electronics, and mobility services, we aim to create a scalable solution that delivers smarter, safer, and more efficient mobility for everyone.”

Bottom line: Uber’s alliance with Nvidia and Stellantis highlights how cross-industry collaboration is becoming the new engine of innovation in mobility. For automakers, it marks a pathway to diversify beyond traditional car sales—tapping into high-margin opportunities like robotaxi services, fleet management, and mobility-as-a-service (MaaS).
