Driving the news: Toyota is recalling 1,024,407 vehicles (including multiple Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru models) for malfunctioning rearview cameras that may display blank or frozen images when backing up, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The details: The recall affects vehicles equipped with Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) systems where software issues can cause the rearview camera to freeze or fail during reverse operations.

  • The problem occurs when drivers shift into reverse within 0.7 to 2.6 seconds after starting the vehicle, potentially causing the rearview image to freeze for up to 1.8 seconds.

  • A separate software issue can prevent the rearview image from displaying at all if the vehicle is powered off during specific camera calibration processes that occur in the first 12.5 seconds after ignition.

  • Affected vehicles span 39 different models across model years 2022-2026

The remedy: Dealers will update the Parking Assist ECU software at no charge. Interim notification letters will be mailed to owners between December 16-31, with additional letters sent once the final software fix is available.
