Driving the news: Toyota is voluntarily recalling over 591,000 vehicles for infotainment screens that can go blank while driving, while separately halting sales of nearly 95,000 electric vehicles due to faulty defrosters.

For context: The larger recall affects popular 2023-2025 models including: the Toyota Venza, Crown, Crown Signia, RAV4, GR Corolla, 4Runner, Camry, Grand Highlander, Tacoma, Highlander, and certain Lexus LS, RX, and TX vehicles. In these vehicles, the 12.3-inch display screens may fail to turn on or go dark during operation.

  • The EV stop-sale impacts Toyota bZ4X, Lexus RZ, and Subaru Solterra models, with dealers instructed to halt sales until repairs are completed.

  • Toyota will begin notifying affected owners in October for the EV issue and November for the screen problems.

Why it matters: Toyota now faces the expensive task of fixing hundreds of thousands of vehicles while temporarily losing EV sales revenue. And the recalls come at a time when the automaker needs every electric vehicle sale it can get before federal tax credits run dry.
