Tesla Supercharger prices go down as competition ramps up

EV drivers report up to 10 cent per kWh price cuts in Europe and North America. (2 min. read)

Tesla is slashing Supercharger prices globally, addressing one of the biggest concerns for EV owners: charging costs creeping close to gas prices.

Driving the news: Tesla has started reducing prices at Supercharger stations in both Europe and North America.

  • Changes have varied between regions, although European and North American users have reported up to 10 cents per kWh price cuts, according to Electrek.

  • Maz de Zegher, head of charging at Tesla, confirmed the move on X, noting it would improve financial sustainability for the company.

Why it matters: While EVs typically come with lower operating costs compared to ICE vehicles, rising charging prices have been eroding that edge, primarily for those that rely on public stations. Tesla’s move to lower costs restores some of that value.

  • The price cuts also come during an all-time high in Supercharger usage, with output reaching a record 12 GWh on Nov. 30, according to Max de Zegher.

Looking ahead: At the same time, other charging stations are also seeing a surge in usage as accessibility continues to improve and more competitors hit the scene.

  • EVgo for instance recently revealed a 111% year-over-year increase in annual throughput in Q3, hitting 78 GWh compared to 37 GWh last year.

  • While Superchargers dominate the scene, more providers mean that EV drivers may soon benefit from competitive pricing, further boosting the cost-efficiency of electric cars.

Bottom line: Tesla’s record-breaking Supercharger usage highlights the growing demand for public EV charging. But lower charging rates could also signal a turning point in affordability, with providers being forced to compete with each other and not just gas prices.
