Driving the news: Stellantis $STLA ( ▼ 3.47% ) is recalling 320,065 plug-in hybrid Jeep Wranglers and Grand Cherokees for battery packs that may catch fire, advising owners to stop charging their vehicles and park them away from structures until repairs are available, according to federal regulators.

For context: The recall expands on a previous 2024 campaign after Stellantis discovered the original software fix was ineffective.

  • The notice covers 228,221 Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrids (2020-2025 models) and 91,844 Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids (2022-2026 models).

  • Samsung SDI-supplied battery packs may contain cells with separator damage that, combined with other complex interactions, can lead to vehicle fires with no warning signs.

  • Fire risk decreases when battery charge is depleted, so owners should refrain from recharging and park away from structures or other vehicles.

What’s next: Stellantis is still developing a fix. Dealer notifications go out November 6, with interim owner notifications beginning December 2.
