South Korea's vehicle export value rose nearly 6% in June, fueled by strong global demand for battery-electric and hybrid vehicles.

The details: The increase marked a record June for the country's auto exports, with shipment values climbing across several key markets, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, as reported by Just Auto.

  • The value of exports to Europe rose 13.7%, while exports to North America increased 12.3% and shipments to Latin America climbed 5.1%.

  • South Korea's exports of "eco-friendly vehicles" to the U.S. surged more than 31%, reaching $2.9 billion, according to the Ministry.

Why it matters: The strong export performance, particularly for battery-electric and hybrid vehicles, reinforces South Korea's role as a key supplier to major global markets while highlighting the resilience of its auto industry despite recent headwinds.

Between the lines: June's rebound follows a period of weaker production and exports caused by auto parts shortages that affected South Korean automakers, particularly Hyundai, per Just Auto.

  • Overall vehicle production rebounded 12% year over year to 394,210 units in June, while domestic sales by the country's "Big Five" automakers rose 5% to 117,390 units.

  • In the first half of 2026, total vehicle production edged down to 2,110,783 units, while export value slipped just over 1% to approximately $36 billion.

Also worth noting: Hyundai’s hybrid sales rose 74% in June, 71% in Q2, and 67% on the year, driven by demand for high-volume models, including the Elantra HEV and Sonata HEV manufactured in South Korea.

Bottom line: South Korea's June export rebound suggests supply conditions are improving, which could translate into more stable inventory levels for the “Big Five’s” dealer base in the U.S., especially those aiming to meet the growing hybrid demand.
