Driving the news: General Motors is recalling 81,177 model year 2025-2026 Chevrolet Equinox EVs over inadequate pedestrian alert sound systems, according to federal regulators.
The details: The recall covers 2025 Equinox EV (59,537 units) and 2026 Equinox EV (21,640 units) built between July 2024 and December 2025. And GM estimates 100% of affected vehicles have the defect.
The pedestrian alert sound system has incorrect software calibration. Sound volume can drop below required levels when the vehicle accelerates from a stop to 6.2 mph.
Pedestrians may not be able to tell by sound whether the vehicle is speeding up or slowing down, increasing injury risk.
But so far, GM is not aware of any field incidents.
Worth noting: GM stopped production on December 16, 2025, and will implement revised software when production resumes in January 2026.
The remedy: GM will update the body control module software via over-the-air update for capable vehicles, or owners can take vehicles to dealers for the fix at no charge. Dealer notifications go out February 2, 2026, and drivers can check VINs here.
