Driving the news: The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a recall query for about 597,571 General Motors $GM ( ▲ 0.26% ) vehicles that have an L87, 6.2L V8 gas engine that was part of a recall last year.
For context: GM announced the original recall in April 2025, citing issues with connecting rod and crankshaft engine components.
The affected models include the 2021–2024 Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon and Yukon XL.
NHTSA announced the query on Monday.
What they’re saying: The Office of Defects Investigation received 36 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires saying their engines failed after they got it serviced for the original recall.
Bottom line: GM's credibility with customers who already brought vehicles in once is on the line, and NHTSA's digging in suggests the problem may be bigger than the original recall addressed.
