New-vehicle appeal continues to improve, with the satisfaction gap between mass-market and premium brands narrowing, according to JD Power.

The details: JD Power's 2026 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study found overall new-vehicle owner satisfaction reached 858 (on a 1,000-point scale), rising 7 index points for a third consecutive year.

  • Interior improvements drove the biggest gains in the ownership experience, with nearly every category improving year over year and interiors posting the largest increase (+11 points).

  • Satisfaction with exterior styling and ease of getting in and out both rose 10 points, underscoring the growing importance of everyday usability, according to JD Power.

  • Porsche ranked highest among premium brands for the third consecutive year with a score of 896, while Mini led the mass-market segment for a third straight year with a score of 875.

What they’re saying: “Automakers have made real progress in reducing problems, but JD Power data makes it clear that quality alone isn’t enough,” said Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at JD Power, per the press statement. “Owners are most enthusiastic when their vehicle not only works reliably but also feels thoughtfully designed and offers comfortable interiors, useful storage and technology that’s easy to live with.”

Why it matters: Rising owner satisfaction highlights that consumers increasingly value comfort, usability and thoughtful design alongside quality, giving dealers additional opportunities to differentiate vehicles beyond price and reliability.

Between the lines: The satisfaction gap between premium and mass-market brands continues to shrink, while all-new models are delivering mixed results compared with carryover vehicles.

  • The gap between premium brands (excluding Tesla) and mass-market brands has narrowed to just 29 points, down from 66 points in 2008.

  • New premium models score 3 index points below carryover models, while new mass-market models outperform carryover models by 12 points.

Bottom line: The latest APEAL results reinforce that the ownership experience is becoming a key competitive differentiator across every price segment, signaling that comfort, technology and everyday usability may be just as important as promoting performance or luxury features.
