Mexico's auto industry produced 1.64 million vehicles during the first five months of the year, with exports and domestic sales continuing to grow despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding North American trade policy.
The details: Production from January through May was largely in line with year-earlier levels, supported by strong output earlier in the year, while domestic sales rose about 5% and exports increased 4%, according to Mexico Business News.
Mexican manufacturers exported 306,288 vehicles in May, up 1.7% year over year, bringing total exports to 1,388,236 units through the first five months of the year.
The U.S. remained Mexico's largest export market, accounting for 75.4% of shipments, though that share declined 3.2% from the same period a year ago.
Exports to Canada rose 29%; shipments to Germany increased 32.7%; exports to Brazil surged 182%; and shipments to Colombia climbed 43.7%.
North America accounted for 87.9% of Mexico's total auto exports during the January-May period.
Why it matters: The continued strength of Mexico's production and export activity underscores the country's importance to the North American automotive supply chain, with stable output helping support vehicle availability even as uncertainty surrounding tariffs and trade policy persists.

Between the lines: GM led both production and exports from Mexico in May, highlighting the concentration of manufacturing activity among major global automakers.
GM produced 76,501 vehicles during the month, followed by Nissan with 46,573 units, Stellantis with 46,441, Ford with 36,346 and Volkswagen with 30,922.
GM also led exports with 69,384 vehicles shipped abroad, followed by Stellantis with 50,583 units, Ford with 35,578, Nissan with 30,190 and Toyota with 28,125.
Bottom line: Mexico remains a critical manufacturing hub for the North American auto industry, but President Donald Trump's position on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement could disrupt the export pipeline, potentially affecting vehicle inventory and supply across several major brands.
