Jeep teases next-gen Compass arriving in 2026

Stellantis is unveiling a redesigned Jeep Compass, debuting in Europe in 2025 and reaching the U.S. in 2026. The compact SUV, built on the new STLA Medium platform, will have gas, hybrid, and electric versions.

Why it matters: A well-priced SUV (electrified or not) could attract more buyers and bring in fresh energy to Jeep’s lineup—something dealers have been asking for. But Stellantis will have to balance cost and performance without sacrificing Jeep’s core rugged identity.

Between the lines: Jeep is in a tough spot. Like many other brands under the Stellantis umbrella, sales are down across the board.

  • The Wrangler, Jeep's most iconic model, dropped 17% from Jan. to Aug. Overall, Jeep sold 35,874 units in Q3 2024, a 14% decline from last year.

  • Many dealers are growing frustrated with an uncompetitive lineup. And they haven’t been quiet about it.

The backlash: U.S. dealers accused CEO Carlos Tavares of the "rapid degradation" of the brand's reputation. Plus, high inventory levels and lagging demand have led to production slowdowns and temporary shutdowns at essential plants like Toledo, which builds the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee.

To strengthen its U.S. operations, Stellantis is investing $406 million in its Michigan facilities, including $97.6 million for new EVs at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant. Jeep has also made key leadership changes, appointing former Ram executive Bob Broderdorf to lead North American operations and address mounting dealer concerns.

Bottom line: Jeep's new Compass is a litmus test for Stellantis. It must deliver and reposition Jeep as a competitor in the compact SUV and EV markets. If the new Compass can perform well and is affordable, it could restore some faith among dealers and buyers. But if Stellantis fumbles, it risks losing even more ground to rivals.
