Driving the news: Hyundai is recalling 51,587 model year 2022-2024 Tucson SUVs after discovering that optional trailer wiring harnesses installed at ports or dealerships can let water in, disabling brake lights or causing fires.
The details: The recall covers Tucson vehicles built between February 2021 and August 2024 that had OEM trailer wiring harnesses installed as add-ons. Hyundai estimates only about 1% actually have the defect.
According to the notice, water can get into the wiring harness control module because of insufficient sealing. That can then kill the brake lights or trailer lights, or create an electrical short that overheats and ignites.
Hyundai knows of three confirmed fires in the U.S. and 287 reports of wiring harness failures between June 2022 and November 2025. No crashes or injuries have been reported.
The remedy: Dealers will replace the trailer wiring harness with an updated version that seals properly at no charge. Hyundai recommends parking affected vehicles outside and away from structures until the fix is done. Owner notifications go out by February 16, 2026, and drivers can check VINs here.
