Hyundai faces back-to-back recalls affecting over 240,000 vehicles
The recalls involve both electric and gas-powered cars across the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands. (2 min read)

Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis are recalling more than 240,000 vehicles on the road in the U.S. and Canada over two safety problems that could increase the risk of crashes. The recalls, announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), are aimed at both electric and gas-powered vehicles.
Driving the news: The biggest chunk of the recall focuses on electric models. A faulty charging system in certain vehicles can cause a sudden loss of power, creating a serious crash risk.
The affected models include:
2022-2024 Kia EV6
2023-2024 Genesis G80 EV
2023-2025 Genesis GV60 and GV70 EV
2022-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5
2023-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6
In total, more than 208,000 vehicles are affected, including 62,000 Kia units and 145,000 Hyundai and Genesis vehicles, with 34,500 of them sold in Canada.
According to Kia, affected vehicles may display warning lights or emit chimes before losing power.
In that case, the company has advised owners to have their vehicles towed to a dealership immediately.
Ignoring the issue could result in a complete loss of power while driving.
On top of that, a separate recall targets 42,000 gas-powered Hyundai Tucson and Santa Cruz models due to a wiring defect that allows the transmission to shift out of park without pressing the brake pedal, increasing the risk of rollaway.
Hyundai discovered the issue in Oct. when a corporate fleet vehicle unexpectedly moved on its own.
The automaker recommends using the parking brake whenever the vehicle is parked until repairs are completed.
Of note: Hyundai has reported no injuries, crashes, or fires related to these defects.
What's next? Owners of affected vehicles will receive recall notifications starting Jan. 19, 2025. Per usual, repairs (which include rewiring and system rerouting) will be free of charge.
