Driving the news: Honda is recalling 406,290 Civic vehicles from model years 2016-2021 after discovering that certain aftermarket accessory wheels are missing critical steel inserts that could cause lug nuts to loosen and wheels to detach while driving.

The details: The recall targets 18-inch accessory alloy wheels sold as dealer add-ons, though Honda estimates only 3,276 vehicles are actually equipped with the defective wheels.

  • The problem traces back to a supplier factory in Italy where a separation fence between finished and unfinished products was removed during equipment installation, causing incomplete wheels to skip the final assembly step and ship without steel lug seat inserts pressed into place.

  • Without the steel inserts, the aluminum seating surface can deform during normal driving, allowing wheel nuts to loosen and potentially detach entirely.

The remedy: Dealers will inspect all four wheels on recalled vehicles and replace affected wheels and hubs at no charge. Owner notification letters go out December 8, 2025. Owners can check if their particular VINs are affected here.
