Google is enhancing its Gemini AI assistant with more personalized features as competition for consumers’ in-vehicle digital experiences intensifies.
The details: The upgrade, called “Personal Intelligence with Gemini,” draws on information from Gmail, Google Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Google Search history, and other connected Google services to better understand consumers’ preferences, activities, and past experiences, according to TechCrunch.
The upgrade is being rolled out through two platforms: Android Auto on users’ phones and Google Built-in software integrated into vehicles.
Personal Intelligence with Gemini launched on Android Auto Tuesday and will expand to vehicles with Google Built-in in the coming months.
Drivers must opt in to use the feature, which can connect information across Google services. For example, a driver navigating to the airport could receive an alert about a flight delay listed in their calendar.
Why it matters: The upgrade could make personalized digital features a bigger factor in vehicle purchasing decisions, putting greater pressure on dealers to understand evolving infotainment systems, demonstrate their capabilities, and explain differences between competing platforms to buyers.

Between the lines: Google's Personal Intelligence upgrade highlights the growing competition in vehicle infotainment as automakers develop their own systems while responding to consumer demand for more personalized digital experiences.
GM has addressed the issue in its 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and 2027 GMC Sierra pickups with a split-screen interface that allows drivers to access Apple CarPlay or Android Auto alongside the automaker's own infotainment offerings.
The split-screen approach follows earlier reports that GM was phasing out CarPlay and Android Auto, though the automaker has said no decisions have been made about introducing the interface in other vehicles.
Competition over in-vehicle digital experiences is expected to intensify as automakers and technology companies pursue a larger share of the vehicle subscription market, projected to reach approximately $22 billion by 2034.
Bottom line: Google's latest Gemini upgrade underscores the growing importance of personalized technology in the automotive industry, highlighting why staying current on evolving infotainment offerings could become increasingly important for dealers looking to improve the sales experience and long-term customer satisfaction.
