GM recalls nearly 462,000 diesel trucks and SUVs
Vehicle owners will receive recall notices by Dec. 9. (2 min. read)
2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
General Motors is recalling a massive number of diesel-powered SUVs and pickup trucks in the U.S. due to a defect in the transmission control valve which can lead to momentary rear-wheel lockup — especially when towing heavy loads, according to the NHTSA.
The details: Drivers experiencing this issue may notice harsh shifting as an early warning sign. In one complaint, a Silverado 2500 driver described a severe downshift incident while towing, nearly leading to a jackknife accident.
Affected models:
2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500, 3500
2020-2022 GMC Sierra 1500, 2500, 3500
2021 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Yukon, Yukon XL
The fix: GM will provide a free software update to address the defect. This update will monitor the control valve for wear, detecting potential lockup risks about 10,000 miles in advance. If excess wear is detected, the transmission will limit shifts to fifth gear. This will prevent the lockup that can occur during downshifts from eighth gear. A service engine light and a reduced propulsion warning will alert drivers if the limitation is activated.
What’s next:
GM has issued a stop-sale on the affected models, prohibiting dealers from selling or using these vehicles until repairs are complete. Certified pre-owned vehicles in dealer inventories will also be temporarily de-certified.
Vehicle owners will receive recall notices by Dec. 9. GM is also offering courtesy transportation for customers until the repair is available.
Worth noting: GM was among the top four automakers responsible for 84.6% of recalls in Q3 2024, along with Tesla, Chrysler/Stellantis, and BMW, reports BizzyCar.
Big picture: Many recalled vehicles remain on the road unfixed, revealing gaps in tracking, communication, and accessibility for vehicle owners. These challenges show the need for more efficient, proactive recall processes as automakers work to ensure the safety of today’s vehicles.
