Ford $F ( ▲ 0.1% ) has put the brakes on dealer deliveries of Mustang Mach-Es due to a lockout issue—adding to the company’s ongoing recall woes.
The issue: In certain conditions, the 12-volt battery in the 2021-2025 model year Mustang Mach Es can unexpectedly discharge, causing the front-door electric latches to retain their last locked or unlocked position.
The recall covers more than 300,000 models of the Mustang Mach E
Includes roughly 196,911 models in the U.S. and another 120,000 globally
Dealers instructed to hold off on demonstrating or delivering affected models
To date, Ford has not received any reports of injuries or accidents tied to the lock/battery issue, which can be fixed with a software update. No official date yet on when the update will be issued, with a Ford spokesperson telling The Detroit News that it will be soon.
Why it matters: The Mustang Mach E stop-delivery order and recall couldn’t come at a worse time for Ford dealers, with U.S. sales of the SUV seeing an 11% increase in May and 2.8% surge in 2025, to date.
More at stake: For Ford, the issue is the latest in a series of recall problems that continue to haunt the American automaker, increasing its warranty costs and cutting into its profits—with nearly two million vehicles recalled in May alone.
May 14, Ford recalled 282,970 Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators due to steering and braking concerns
May 27, the automaker issued a recall for nearly 500,000 older iterations of the Ford Explorers
May 28, Ford recalled more than 1 million vehicles because of a rearview camera issue
These three recalls represent some of Ford’s biggest in May, but there were more—with the automaker already issuing several more in June.
Bottom line: Ford’s stop-delivery order on the Mustang Mach-E is another hit to the automaker’s already strained recall record—signaling that the automaker continues to struggle to address its quality issues.
