Ford is either flexing its confidence in the 2028 Ford Fathom or strategically building interest in the EV pickup by enticing potential buyers with a “pre-order invite.”
Then again, it’s likely a bit of both.
The details: The “pre-order invite,” which apparently opened Monday (Oct. 12), allows interested buyers to register their interest in the pickup, though official pre-orders won’t open until early 2027.
The invite, available on a Fathom-dedicated page at Ford.com, requires interested buyers to provide their name, email, and ZIP code to “…be one of the first to own the all-new Fathom.”
Official pre-orders typically require additional information, including a reservation deposit and preferences for model, trim, color, and options.
The Ford.com Fathom page also features a series of short videos, styled like social media posts, giving potential buyers an inside look at various design and engineering aspects of the EV.
Why it matters: Ford’s early outreach could help dealers build a pipeline of prospective Fathom buyers well ahead of the pickup’s launch, creating opportunities to gauge local interest and prepare for demand as the automaker targets a new segment of price-conscious EV shoppers.

Between the lines: The centerpiece of Ford’s market positioning for the Fathom is its sub-$30,000 price point and extensive list of features, many clearly aimed at attracting younger buyers to the vehicle—hence the social media-style videos.
The average new EV costs $56,238, according to Cox Automotive, per a previous CDG News report on the Fathom.
The electric pickup will offer BlueCruise, Ford’s hands-free driving assistant, and Apple Maps on a high-resolution touchscreen.
Ford also said the truck will offer more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4.
What they’re saying: “It's not just for price point. It's the value that you get for the price point, the content that you're getting,” Kay Hart, General Manager for Ford Model e, per CDG News. “Blue Cruise-capable vehicles with hands-free driving, digital car key, large touch screen... the versatility of an open bed, the true adaptability, the value of this vehicle is what I think is the core message.”
Bottom line: Ford is using early buyer engagement and aggressive pricing to build momentum for the Fathom ahead of its launch, potentially giving dealers an opportunity to reach a broader pool of EV shoppers as the automaker bets on affordability and technology to drive demand.
