Driving the news: Ford $F ( ▲ 0.57% ) is recalling 108,762 Escape SUVs from model years 2020-2022 and 2025 after liftgate hinge covers began detaching while driving, creating road hazards for other vehicles and increasing crash risk.
The details: The recall covers 102,350 Escapes built between November 2018 and April 2022, plus 6,412 from the 2025 model year built between December 2024 and April 2025. All affected vehicles have the panoramic roof option, and Ford estimates about 6% actually have the defect.
The problem has two different root causes depending on model year. For 2020-2022 vehicles, hinge cover attachments weren't fully engaged during assembly at Ford's Louisville plant.
For 2025 vehicles, a supplier quality issue caused loss of adhesion in the dual lock attachment feature.
Warning signs include hinge covers that aren't flush with the roof, wind noise, and rattling while driving.
Ford logged 1,835 warranty claims between November 2019 and August 2025, plus one NHTSA complaint. No accidents or injuries have been reported.
The remedy: Dealers will remove, inspect, and reinstall hinge covers to ensure they're properly secured at no charge. Owner notification letters go out January 15-22, 2026 and drivers can check their VINs here.
