A new Car Wars review reveals that while more customers are calling dealerships with the intent to buy a vehicle or schedule service, many stores still fail to capitalize on those high-value opportunities.
First things first: The report, 2026 Mid-Year Review: Dealership Phone Performance Trends & Benchmarks, found that while dealership phone volume remained steady through the first half of the year, customer purchase and service intent increased significantly.
Sales calls grew from 23% to 26% of inbound call volume during the six-month period, while service calls increased from 32% to 36%.
The share of unconnected sales calls ending because customers hung up while on hold fell from 41% in January to 25% in June.
The analysis examined about 44.4 million inbound calls and 77.3 million outbound calls, with call volume tapering during the summer while overall demand remained relatively stable month to month.
Why it matters: As more inbound calls reflect buyers and service customers ready to take action, improving phone handling and follow-up can translate directly into higher appointment rates, stronger customer retention and more revenue.
Between the lines: Missed opportunities continue to limit dealerships' ability to convert high-intent callers, particularly when it comes to appointment setting and missed-call follow-up.
Dealerships invited customers to visit the showroom on just 53.6% of sales calls, well below the 69% invite rate achieved by top-performing stores.
Dealers missed more than 6.5 million sales calls and 3.4 million service calls, while only 46% of missed calls received a follow-up.
Even more concerning, nearly two-thirds of sales customers (64%) and service customers (66%) who couldn't reach someone at the dealership never called back.

Overall, dealerships successfully connected 56% of sales callers and 59% of service callers, while top-performing dealerships achieved connection rates of 71% and 78%, respectively.
What they’re saying: "Successfully connecting more callers with the right person remains one of the most effective ways to improve both customer experience and dealership performance," added the Car Wars report.
Also worth noting: Across every month analyzed, call volume consistently peaked between 10 a.m. and noon, with appointment booking trends following a similar pattern.
Bottom line: The findings reinforce that every inbound call represents a valuable sales or service opportunity. Dealers that strengthen phone processes, reduce missed calls, and improve follow-up stand to convert more high-intent customers and gain a competitive advantage.
