Caribou customers saved an average of $165 per month through auto refinancing in Q3 2026, up from $162 in Q2, with credit tier, loan term, and vehicle type continuing to drive savings.

First things first: The online auto refinance marketplace found that average refinance loan amounts declined slightly, while interest rates rose late in the third quarter.

  • The average refinance loan amount was approximately $34,000, with monthly payments ranging from $716 to $741.

  • The Federal Reserve raised its target interest rate range by a quarter point to 3.75%–4% on September 16, its first increase since mid-2023, and held it in October, though a hike is expected in December.

  • The 10-year Treasury yield reached 5.25% in October, pushing auto rates higher in the third quarter.

Why it matters: Customers' interest in reducing existing auto loan costs underscores the importance of financing options, payment flexibility, and affordability discussions throughout the sales process.

  • Borrowers with excellent credit saw the highest average savings at roughly $175 per month, followed by those with very good credit at $165.

  • Fair- and good-credit borrowers saw APR reductions of approximately 5 percentage points.

  • Refinanced 84-month loans generated average monthly savings of $178, compared with $163 for 72-month loans and $147 for 60-month loans, with shorter terms producing the largest APR reductions.

  • Diesel vehicle owners saved the most among fuel types, averaging $249 per month on loan balances of approximately $52,000, while coupe owners led among body styles at $205 per month.

  • Millennials recorded the highest average monthly savings at $179, followed by Gen X at $168. Gen Z borrowers saw the largest APR reduction at approximately 4.9 percentage points, translating to $148 in monthly savings.
