With Stellantis’ recent recall of 1 million Jeep vehicles, CARFAX noted this week that there are now 3.2 million vehicles nationwide with “park outside” warnings.
Driving the news: The park outside recall warns owners to park a vehicle outside due to a fire risk, even if it is turned off and unattended.
Automakers and federal safety regulators issued the warnings.
Along with being left outside, owners are urged to park away from any structure.
Stellantis recall: Earlier this month, Stellantis issued a recall for Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators from 2021 for a potential fire risk.
The issue was connected to overheating in the electric hydraulic power steering pump.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported 51 fires, causing one injury from the issue.
When asked by CDG News about contacting owners and repairs, a Stellantis spokesperson referred to the company’s statement that “affected customers will be notified by first-class mail when they can schedule service. FCA US is working diligently to accelerate remedy availability and anticipates a solution no later than July.”
The dealer alert advises service departments to conduct a voluntary safety recall on all affected vehicles to inspect and repair or replace affected parts as necessary. A stop sale was issued for impacted VINs.
Other recent recalls: Stellantis also issued a park outside recall for 320,000 2020-2025 Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrids and 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids in November due to a battery issue.
BMW issued a park outside recall in September for 200,000 vehicles due to corrosion of the engine starter relay. The impacted models were:
2019-2022 Z4
2019-2021 330I
2020-2022 X3
2020-2022 X4
2020-2022 530I
2021-2022 430I standard and convertible
2022 230I
Hot spots for recalls: CARFAX compiled a list of top 10 states with vehicles under the park outside recalls.
Texas has the most at 302,000.
California also hit the 300,000 threshold.
And Florida was third at 270,000 as the only other state with more than 200,000.

What they’re saying: “An unrepaired park outside recall doesn't just put a vehicle at risk, it can threaten garages, homes, and anything parked nearby,” said Faisal Hasan, Vice President of Data Acquisition at CARFAX, in a press release. “Although we never want to see a jump in these serious recalls, the good news is recall repairs are free.”
Takeaway for dealers: As noted in Stellantis' dealer alert, federal law requires that new-vehicle inventory have recall service performed on affected units before retail delivery. Violation of this requirement by a dealer could result in a civil penalty of up to $27,874 per vehicle.
