BMW is cutting its financial targets for the second time this year and reporting a third-quarter profit slump as the automaker restructures its operations.
First things first: The company's latest forecast cut comes amid intensifying challenges for European automakers, including plunging sales in China and U.S. tariffs, Reuters reported.
BMW now forecasts a margin of between minus 0.5% and 0.5% this year, well below its long-term target of 8% to 10%.
BMW's sales in China dropped 22% in the first nine months of the year, which the company said reflected a broader market downturn.
In the U.S., the automaker's sales increased 3.4% in Q3 and 4.3% through the first nine months of the year, reaching 287,154 vehicles.
Dealer note: BMW's stronger U.S. sales offer a bright spot amid its global challenges, but the company's shrinking margins and restructuring efforts could potentially impact vehicle supply, product mix, and pricing, which will be key as BMW works to restore profitability.

Looking ahead: BMW's restructuring plan includes an initiative launched in July to eliminate 8,000 jobs in Germany, accelerate management cuts and build on the momentum of its new Neue Klasse lineup, led by the 2027 iX3 in the U.S. market.
A key component of the plan includes ramping up production of vehicles developed under the Neue Klasse design philosophy and phasing out older models more quickly to improve profitability, according to Bloomberg.
In the third quarter of 2026, BMW sold 1,101 iX3 SUVs in the U.S., with deliveries beginning in September and the model outselling electric vehicles from Porsche, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
Investors appeared confident in the restructuring plan led by CEO Milan Nedeljkovic, with BMW shares rising 2.3% after third-quarter results came in largely in line with forecasts.
"Current developments in our industry call for decisiveness and swift implementation. We will therefore specifically intensify and accelerate structural measures," said Nedeljkovic, adding, "We do not want to lose this momentum."
Bottom line: BMW's latest forecast cut highlights the mounting pressure on European automakers to reduce costs and remain competitive, with the success of the automaker’s restructuring and Neue Klasse rollout potentially playing a significant role in future product competitiveness, inventory availability, and sales growth.
