Audi is making one of its most significant product packaging changes in years, introducing streamlined trim structures across select 2027 models.

The details: While the move is designed to simplify ordering and improve production efficiency, it will also change how dealership sales teams need to present vehicles to customers.

  • The new strategy consolidates equipment into fewer, better-equipped trims, reducing the number of standalone options and configuration combinations buyers have traditionally navigated.

  • The goal is a simpler ordering process that will, “more easily meet their needs, provide more access to options on entry models, and give customers more flexibility,” according to Audi’s press release.

An Audi spokesperson told CDG News via email, that while the company cannot comment on future product plans outside of that which were announced in last week’s model year release, “one could imagine this strategy may be applied to other models as their model lines are updated down the road.”

What they’re saying: “Audi is following in the footsteps of its German rivals, BMW and Mercedes, and focusing on a ‘package’ approach for these models. By removing some complexity around trim levels, it should be a better experience for shoppers,” said CDK’s David Thomas, adding that most of the luxury automakers still choose to go with the standard trim level approach.

Why it matters: Audi's simplified packaging strategy shifts more of the vehicle's value into the trim itself, reducing ordering complexity while requiring dealers to adapt how they position features and value during the sales process.

Between the lines: The packaging overhaul comes as Audi works to reverse a prolonged U.S. sales decline amid tariff pressures, intensifying competition and an EV strategy that has lost its charge.

  • Last year marked Audi's weakest U.S. sales performance of the decade, with 164,942 vehicles sold, according to AutoBlog.

  • A lawsuit filed against Audi in December has the automaker's 2026 sales projected at roughly 144,000 deliveries, though Audi says those figures reflect retail sales only.

  • If the complaint's projections are close to accurate, 2026 sales would be down more than 30% from the 228,550 vehicles sold in 2023.

Bottom line: Audi's streamlined trim strategy has the potential to simplify inventory management and improve the customer buying experience. For dealers, success will depend on effectively communicating the added value built into each trim while helping customers navigate a lineup with fewer customization choices.
