Tesla hikes refreshed Model S/X prices by $5,000 despite minimal changes

Driving the news: Tesla $TSLA ( ▲ 1.94% ) quietly updated its Model S and Model X with a handful of tweaks and immediately raised prices by $5,000.
For context: The changes are pretty basic: a front camera, some suspension work, noise reduction, and 5 extra miles of range on the Model S. Tesla also swapped out chrome trim for black and added the ambient lighting that's been in their cheaper cars for a while.
Why it matters: Tesla's offering big discounts on current inventory (up to $6,000 off) while charging more for the refreshed versions. The move suggests Tesla wants to clear existing stock quickly while establishing higher price points for the updated vehicles. Whether customers will pay the premium for relatively modest improvements will test the brand loyalty of Tesla's luxury buyers.
