Driving the news: Nissan is recalling 443,899 vehicles over faulty engine bearings that could cause engine failure, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

For context: The recall covers 2021-2024 Rogues, 2019-2020 Altimas, and select Infiniti models with 1.5 and 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engines.

  • Nissan will inspect vehicles by removing oil pans and checking for metal debris from defective bearings.

  • Vehicles with clean oil get fresh oil and basic maintenance, while those with metal debris get engine repairs or replacements.

Why it matters: This represents a major quality control issue for Nissan's variable compression technology, which the company has heavily promoted as cutting-edge engineering.
