Driving the news: Stellantis $STLA ( ▲ 1.12% ) is recalling 291,664 Ram ProMaster fleet vehicles from model years 2018-2026 due to cooling fan modules that can overheat and catch fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The details: The recall affects Ram ProMaster vans built for fleet customers between July 20, 2017 and October 7, 2025.

  • The defect involves premature bearing wear in the cooling fan motor combined with inadequate fuse protection on the 400W fan circuit, which can lead to high current draw and vehicle fires.

  • The cooling fan module was supplied by MAHLE Thermal and Fluid Systems in Germany.

The remedy is still under development. And in the meantime, the NHTSA issued a "Do Not Drive" and "Park Outside" advisory for affected vehicles. Dealer notification letters will go out around October 30, with interim owner notifications beginning November 20.

Bottom line: This recall is a big disruption for fleet operations that depend on these vehicles for daily revenue. Ram dealers with strong commercial accounts now face the challenge of keeping business customers satisfied while waiting for a fix.
