Hyundai's 2025 Ioniq 5 won't need a Tesla Supercharger adapter

Hyundai’s upcoming 2025 Ioniq 5 will be one of the first EV to feature native Tesla Supercharger compatibility, removing the need for a special connector like most non-Tesla EVs.

Driving the news: Hyundai unveiled the refreshed Ioniq 5 last week, showing off a bunch of new upgrades including an improved driving range.

  • One of the biggest enhancements is the EV’s charging connector, which uses the North American Charging Standard (NACS), the same standard developed for Tesla’s Supercharger network.

  • This will make it the first Hyundai EV with a default NACS connector and one of the first non-Tesla EVs available to consumers able to use a Supercharger without an adapter.

  • New Ioniq 5 models will also come with CCS adapters, giving buyers the option to use stations from other charging providers.

Why this matters: Last year, virtually all automakers agreed to adopt the NACS in future models so that consumers could easily access the massive Supercharger network. But the transition has been painfully slow.

  • Aside from Hyundai, Rivian has also showcased an EV with a native NACS connector (the R2). However, that model isn’t scheduled to arrive until 2026.

  • Until the transition to NACS happens, most consumers will be stuck using adapters or universal plugs.

Bottom line: This is a huge win for Hyundai. While other manufacturers likely aren’t far behind, this will be a major selling point for the Ioniq 5 when it arrives at dealerships this fall.
