Honda recalling 700,000 Accord, CR-V, Civics over fuel pump leaks
This is the second major recall from Honda in October. (2 min. read)
Honda is recalling more than 700,000 vehicles over fuel pump leaks, which can increase the risk of fire.
Driving the news: This marks the second notable recall from Honda in October, the former impacting 1.7 million vehicles with possible steering issues, including some of the brand’s top models.
The latest recall affects the 2023 through 2024 Accord and Accord Hybrid, 2023 through 2025 CR-V Hybrid, and 2025 Civic and Civic Hybrid.
According to the automaker, the high-pressure fuel pump used in each model may crack, leak fuel, and put drivers in danger. However, Honda isn’t aware of any reports of injuries or deaths related to the issue, despite receiving 145 warranty claims between 2023 and 2024.
Honda dealers will inspect and replace defective fuel pumps for free. To check if your vehicle is impacted by a recall, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website.
Zooming in: Recalls continue to run rampant across the auto industry, driven partially by the increasing complexity of vehicles and partially by proactive measures from car manufacturers.
However, there have been some improvements. Honda, alongside Hyundai and Nissan, has shown the biggest declines in recall volume in 2024. Ford, which had the most recalls in 2023, has also fallen behind as of Q3, according to BizzyCar.
At the same time, other brands are struggling more than ever. Chrysler now leads all car makers in U.S. recalls, adding to the problems facing Stellantis. Toyota has also been forced to recall multiple high-profile models this year, eating into its quarterly sales.
Bottom line: Although recalls continue to present problems for automakers and consumers alike, dealers can leverage them to boost customer retention and potentially generate millions in profit. Serving the incoming flux of Honda customers looking for fuel pump replacements should be seen as an opportunity for dealers, rather than a burden.
